The National Police is urging everyone, including journalists, to "cooperate" with the police in tracking down the original number used to send a text message containing rumors about President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The text spread among those working in the media over the weekend. The President himself even responded to the information in the SMS, saying the message was a serious attack against him.
"The police did not receive the SMS from the original number," National Police deputy spokesperson Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said Tuesday.
He said if any journalist received the original SMS, reportedly sent from Singapore, the journalist should come to the police and "cooperate" by providing information to the police.
The SMS was allegedly sent by M. Nazaruddin, a Democratic Party legislator who left the country for Singapore a day before he was banned from overseas travel.
Nazaruddin is caught up in a corruption case and was dismissed as the treasurer of the Democratic Party, which is also the President's party.
"Please help us with this case," Boy said.
He added that the National Police would seek the help of the Singaporean Embassy in Indonesia to "gain access to cell phone network providers in Singapore".
