President orders immediate sea border talks with M`sia

SBY PRESIDENCY

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered immediate sea border talks with Malaysia to prevent a recurrence of the recent incident in Indonesia`s Bintan waters.

The president issued the order during a meeting with Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa and Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister Fadel Muhammad at the presidential office here on Friday.

Fadel said his office would coordinate with the Coordinating Ministry for Legal, Political and Security Affairs next week to make preparations for the talks.

He said he also had contacted his Malaysian counterpart and the neighboring country had expressed readiness to discuss the sea borders.

The talks could hopefully be started next month, he said.

"As a matter of fact, such border talks have been delayed for a long time. We want progressive discussion (with Malaysia). The talks will start as early as in September," he said.

Marty said both countries had laid overlapping claims to the waters.

But he believed Indonesia would have stronger position because it laid a claim to the waters under the map number 349 of 2009 while Malaysia`s claim was based on the older map of 1979.

The incident happened on August 13 when three Indonesian fisheries officers based in Riau Islands Province were detained and taken to Malaysia by a Malaysian police boat crew who had intercepted their boat on their way to Batam Island while escorting a Malaysian fishing boat that had been caught poaching in Indonesian waters.

The Foreign Ministry has sent a diplomatic note to the Malaysian government protesting against the recent incursion into Indonesian waters by Malaysian fishermen and maritime police near Bintan Island.

"By checking the coordinates of the spot where the incident happened, we have established that it took place in Indonesian waters. Therefore, we sent a protest note to the Malaysian government through the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta," Marty told a press conference on Wednesday.

"We not only protested the border violation but also the arrest of Indonesian marine and fisheries officers by Malaysian marine police," he added.(source:Antara)
