President Too ‘Slim’ for Old Clothes on New Diet

Indonesia’s president is on a diet program to lose a kilogram every three days, despite eating as much as seven times a day, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

Heru Lelono said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said fried foods — a personal favorite — were out but his eating routine was unchanged as part of a five-week program to reduce weight.

“The diet does not involve reducing [the amount] of food,” Heru said. “We understand from nutrition experts that at a certain age, food should be managed.”

He said that fried foods were now no longer appropriate given Yudhoyono’s lack of physical exercise.

“When he was in the military he was more mobile, now he only sits and it is his brain that does the work — so the food intake should be different,” he said.

Heru, who said he did not know the president’s weight, conceded, however, that Yudhoyono “actually eats a lot, but it is managed.”

“He has breakfast at 7 a.m. At 10:30 he has big meal, such as fish or chicken. He eats again at 12:30 and 17:00. If I’m not mistaken he eats six to seven times [a day].”

Despite the intake, Heru claimed Yudhoyono can lose as much as a kilogram every three days with the diet program.

He said that though Yudhoyono once “looked fat, now he’s slimmer,” adding that the president was in the “best condition” and he was too skinny for his over-sized clothes.

Heru said if the five-week diet did not show satisfactory results it would be repeated.

He said concerns that Yudhoyono was in ill-health and had suffered a stroke were unfounded.

“You might not be able to defeat him at sport.”
