With the Valentine's Day season upon us, First Lady Ani Yudhoyono used the occasion of a visit to a military camp to compare her husband's rugged good looks to those of the late actor John Wayne.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the First Lady paid a visit to the 744 Satya Yuda Bhakti Infantry Batallion Command Headquarter in Belu District, East Nusa Tenggara Thursday. Yudhoyono was given a green beret upon arrival, prompting Ani to recall the macho movie legend.
“Bapak [Yudhoyono] looks like John Wayne,” Ani joked to the laughter of the soldiers, according to the president's official Web site www.presidenri.go.id.
Wayne, also known as 'The Duke', appeared in 142 movies throughout his career. He starred in the movie "The Green Berets" about US forces in Vietnam.
Yudhoyono was the 744 battalion commander from 1986 to 1988 when he was still a major. The headquarters at the time was based in East Timor, when the country was still a part of Indonesia. The battalion relocated to Kupang after East Timor gained independence following a 1999 referendum.
Recalling his service, the president said, "We carried out our duties in East Timor, which now is a sovereign country, we did our work for the country and for the Merah Putih [national flag].”
According to the president, battalion 744 is unique because it is the only military unit formerly based in East Timor that still exists.
“We should be proud of the history and pray to God to help us carry out our duties for our country,” Yudhoyono said.
