Before Dutch Visit , SBY Proposes Candidate for Police Chief

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will submit the name of nominee for national police chief to the House of Representatives (DPR) before he starts his five-day state visit to The Netherlands on Tuesday, a minister said.

"Let’s wait for (a further statement) from him before he leaves for The Netherlands," Minister/State Secretary Sudi Silalahi said prior to a plenary Cabinet meeting at the presidential office here on Monday.

But he declined to elaborate on whether the President would propose the nominee for the national police chief to the DPR on Monday or Tuesday.

"It could be today or tomorrow before he leaves for The Netherlands," he said.

Yudhoyono is scheduled to leave for The Netherlands on Tuesday afternoon after attending the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the National Defense Force (TNI).

Earlier, DPR Chairman Marzuki Alie said the government was likely to submit the name of candidate for the national police chief to the House on Monday evening.

"Let’s wait. The DPR leadership will announce the name of the candidate for the national police chief to the press shortly after receiving it," he said.

Asked about the name of candidate for the national police chief, Marzuki said he had no idea about it. Coms. Gen. Nanan Sukarna, Coms. Gen. Imam Sudjarwo and Coms. Gen. Ito Sumardi are among those widely tipped to replace Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri as national police chief.

Yudhoyono told a press conference last week he would propose a candidate for the national police chief to the House early in October. The President said the election of the national police chief should not be linked to politics.
