President to install 5 deputy ministers, more to follow

SBY PRESIDENCY

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will on Wednesday inaugurate five deputy ministers, among them high-profile figures such as Bayu Krisnamurti, Bambang Susantono and Mahendra Siregar.

Bayu, currently the deputy for agriculture and maritime affairs to the coordinating economic minister, will be appointed deputy agriculture minister, State Secretary Sudi Silalahi said Tuesday.

Bambang, meanwhile, the deputy for infrastructure and regional development to the coordinating economic minister, will be named deputy transportation minister.

The new deputy trade minister will be Mahendra, the executive director of the Indonesian Export Financing Agency (LPEI).

The two other deputies to be sworn in Wednesday are Hermanto Dardak, director general for highways at the Public Works Ministry, who will become second-in-charge at the ministry, and Alex Retraubun, director general for maritime affairs, coastal areas and small islands at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, who will be appointed deputy industry minister.

The latter two may be relatively unknowns, but Sudi said all candidates had gone through the proper selection procedure.

He added Yudhoyono had summoned candidates for the five deputy ministerial posts to his private residence in Cikeas, West Java, to ask them to sign a pact of integrity and performance.

The two documents were also signed by all Cabinet ministers before assuming their posts.

"*The five deputy ministerial candidates* were chosen through the same mechanism to select the ministers, though not as exacting," Sudi said at the Presidential Palace after returning from meeting with Yu-dhoyono at Cikeas.

He added the five men all had solid professional grounding, in accordance with the 2008 State Ministries Law stipulating that deputy ministers be government officials.

Yudhoyono will inaugurate the five deputy ministers Wednesday morning, as well as the new head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Gita Wiryawan.

Gita's appointment as head of the BKPM was announced at the same time the Cabinet was revealed last month, but his inauguration was delayed. There has been no reason given for the delay.

Sudi said the inauguration of the five deputy ministers would be a first wave, with more to follow, as Yudhoyono planned to appoint at least half a dozen more deputy ministers.

"In total there will be perhaps deputy ministers for 11 ministries, but *the appointment of* the others has yet to commence," Sudi said.

He added other presidential staff would also be appointed.(thejakartapost)
