The General Elections Commission (KPU) on Tuesday officially declared Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono as president and vice president-elect based on the results of the 2009 election.The declaration, contained in KPU Decree No.373/Kpts/KPU/2009, dated August 18, 2009 and signed by KPU chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary, was read out by KPU Secretary General Suripto Bambang Setyadi at an open KPU plenary session here.
"The KPU herewith officially declares Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Boediono as the president and vice president for the 2009-2014 period," Setyadi said.
In the presidential election on July 8, 2009 the Yudhoyono-Boediono pair won a landslide victory by garnering 73,874,562 votes or 60.80 percent of the total number of valid votes (121,504,481).
While the two other pairs, namely Megawati Soekarnoputri-Prabowo Subianto had won 32,548,105 votes or 26.79 percent and Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto pair trailed behind with 15,081,814 votes or 12.41 percent of the total ballot.
According to Law No.42/2008 on presidential elections, the elected pair are the one who hace collected more than 50 percent of the total valid votes with at least 20 percent in every province.
In the July 8 election, the Yudhoyono-Boediono pair had more than 50 percent of the total national ballot and over 20 percent in 33 provinces.
Therefore, KPU chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary said, Yudhoyono and Boediono were the pair deserving to be confirmed as the elected president and vice president for the 2009-2014 period.
The results of 2009 election were then handed to a number of institutions, namely the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR), the House of Representatives (DPR), the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court, the president, political parties participating in the election, and the elected president and vice president.
Present at the KPU plenary session were the leaders of those institutions, namely MPR chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid, Constitutional Court chairman Moh Mahfud MD, General Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) chairman Nur Hidayat Sardini, Democratic Party secretary general Marzuki Alie, United Development Party secretary general Irgan Chairul Mahfiz, and National Mandate Party secretary general Zulkifli Hasan.(ANTARA News)
